Rome Art Week

New contemporary art festival of free cultural events in Roman galleries and studios.

Art lovers in the capital can look forward to a new cultural project this autumn with the arrival of Rome Art Week.

This collaborative non-profit venture is scheduled for 24-29 October and has been organised by gallery owners to promote contemporary art in Rome.

The six-day festival will be divided between contemporary Roman galleries and open studios of the city’s professional artists.

So far more than 40 galleries and 70 artists have signed up to the initiative.

The events are free and will be highlighted with a calendar and interactive map on the Rome Art Week website.

Villa Sciarra Roma Italy

The Villa Sciarra, located on the slopes of the Janiculum, not far from the American and Spanish academies, is steeped in lore: in ancient times the grounds were considered the sacred grove of Furrina, an ancient Roman goddess associated with water; Caesar was said to have hosted Cleopatra in the gardens; and in 1906 an ancient marble statue of Bacchus with gilded face and hands was unearthed on the property.

Surrounding the arched house are two fountains with fauns while cherubs grace the Fontana dei Putti. Another fountain features four sphinxes personifying the human vices wrath, lust, greed, and gluttony. The villa’s tower over the 15th-century house completes the scene with a panoramic view that one can hardly believe.

Austrian forest in central Roman square

300 Austrian trees go on display in Rome’s Piazza S. Silvestro.

Visitors to Piazza S. Silvestro in Rome’s city centre will find a translucent dome housing 300 Austrian trees, between 8 and 11 September.

Titled Airship, the five-metre-high structure simulates a dense Austrian forest, containing 300 trees, plants, mosses and ferns, and can be visited for free from 10.00-22.00.

Airship comes from the Austrian Pavilion of Expo 2015, and is the work of breathe.earth.collective, a network promoting the fundamental value of fresh air.

The forest installation, which has already been displayed in Padua and Milan, offers examples of three different forest ecotypes: alpine environment, mid-mountain and Danube region.
